[ Some time after this conversation (and some handwaved hashing out with kelly) Phil walks up to the bridge with a book in hand. It's a mediocre murder mystery that he's about 70 pages into. Well. Someone somewhere loves it, he's sure, but right now it's mostly eh to him.

I don’t know. Anything that interests you. The most controversial take you have on the genre of action movies. The authors you hate or love the most. Funny stories from previous voyages. An under-appreciated interest in typographical classification.
It was more the palm than anything else, but she really wanted to be dramatic about it. [shrugs] Very early on in this voyage, she came to my door with one of her little friends, whose name escapes me. They were being very annoying, so I locked them in shadows and told them to decide which one would die.

She tried to use fire magic in that enclosed space, and, well. It was so funny I actually didn't even make one of them kill the other at all.
[ "Early on into this voyage" really puts this into perspective huh. It must've been even before he got here. March or April of last year, something like that. At the same time, his last big impression of the Captain was in August with the race, and between that and this story, he isn't surprised by this sort of behavior at all; but what a nice change it's been that it hasn't been a pattern lately. What wonders finding someone to care about does to a person. ]
And she still held onto that to bring it up at the trial? The fire and not the whole choosing-who-dies part of that setup? ... You'd think she'd be more mad about the enforced murder than accidentally pan-searing herself.

She's almost exclusively mad at that part. Namely because she is fully aware it was her own fault, and she is pathologically incapable of admitting that. That's what makes it so funny.
I shouldn’t be an armchair psychologist, but it sounds either like she isn’t used to failure or she’s too used to not being taken seriously.

Would you call her the most annoying person you’ve ever had on board? I wouldn’t think so, given how many have come through here, but I don’t know.
Hey, I don't know everything she's done. [ Snark snark. ] I've been here since June, so yes, but I never talked to her. Most of my experience had been hearing her laugh from two decks over.
