Well, I assumed they were symbols that drew power from somewhere.

[Then the sigils Crabb smudged might not have been placed by the Captain, or at least were not fueled by him. Though, perhaps that other ghost, the other soul, is what powered them. But if the sigils kept it at bay, then...
