The Captain has been directionless for so long that he's developed a... dependency on our suffering. He fills that void of purpose by becoming the instigator, the villain. [oh no, he's going to start pacing now,] Negative emotions are easier to draw out than positive ones, and he is exceedingly impatient for more power. Except he didn't even know why he needed that power until recently, after the rain...

Has he taken any more memory charms since then?

[audibly proud] Not one!

Good. That's good. [some relief, there; at least that's one mind-altering magic done away with.]

There's... Hm. I think I've seen hints of something more behind the facade, but you're the expert. Do you think there's something there that can be... helped? Or is he too far gone to save? [shoving his hands into his pockets before he starts wringing them] I'm still not entirely convinced I'm not getting conned as it is. It would make sense. He's already owned up to it, after all...

[the fact that he's trusting Friday with all of this -- regardless of whether or not it gets back to the Captain -- goes unmentioned.]

I don't really know! I'm not even sure what "help" would mean... [pause] So, I'm definitely not the expert on that! You already have a better idea of it after months than I had in centuries...

[that... is alarming to learn, although it shouldn't be such a surprise. shouldn't she -- but of course not. she's the Captain's construct, so how would she know more than him? but it does vindicate his methodology, and he does enjoy being a trailblazer...

he definitely did stop pacing there while he processed all that]

I don't even know what I mean when I say it. That's probably the problem. [word-vomiting that particularly sensitive information to the Captain's construct is still out, but there is one thing they can focus on:]

Right now, I suppose helping him means going to an island to steal something for him. How much do you know about that?

But unlike him, you care about the passengers, and they're the ones I'm most worried about. Will he use whatever item I'm getting to harm them?

If it's what I think he's after... Not directly! It's not dangerous or harmful to people!

How much of this conversation is going to make its way back to the Captain, by the way? Palamedes implied there was some modicum of privacy here.

I don't really have to tell him much about anything, because he doesn't like listening to me talk! He's usually not paying much attention to anybody, but this is the only place you can be really sure...

If I were to ask you specifically not to repeat something back to him, would you be able to do that?

Of course! I respect the privacy of passengers! [no she doesn't]

[yeah it isn't like he actually trusts her all that much. this is maybe more of a test, anyway. after all, the only thing at risk is his own ego.]

...Did he talk to you about what happened on the bridge?

He said you watched a movie and played a game, and that he didn't want to talk about it anymore, shut up!

Did he say anything else? Did he seem... upset about how it went?

Well, gosh, not any more than nor--

[INCREDIBLY LONG PAUSE]

... Did something else happen? [vibrating]

[the fact that he hesitates for as long has he does probably answers her question, but after a long moment...]

...Yes. I mean -- not really. Not exactly. There was a movie, and a game, and [shut up don't want to talk about it] I think I may have... embarrassed him? Or upset him? I couldn't tell. [SHRUG] He turned into a shadow and hid under the couch. I have no idea what that means.

she just kind of, places her hand over where her heart would be. still. silence.]

[immediately trying to defend himself like he's about to get scolded]

I didn't do anything. It wasn't like I was being mean to him. I was [f l i r t i n g] playing nice with our mad captor, and that was... fine, until it wasn't. He didn't have trouble with it the previous night, so how was I supposed to know!
