You're in a position of power on the hierarchy of the ship. While the Captain might be in charge, you are the one most will interface with. They'll follow your rules because they must, and if they don't you can make them. I've seen you be able to be in multiple places at once, to always know when a fire is going to break out or a child is going to drink alcohol. You can continue to enforce your rules, but there's no one who's going to do the same to you.
