[Okay, awkward, awkward, it's not landing, April tries to pick it back up.]
Well it's - you ah, wear it ... Well, it's nice to see someone like...
[What, 'like them'? That's not true, because they're different from each other at the core, it's just about the surface. Which is important! But much as April has been zeroing in on the similarities, they've been working in too many detail-oriented positions to not get caught on the technicalities. They still press forward.]
I mean, I have a face that's... hard to read sometimes, too.
[They wink, or would if they had eyes, which they... might? Maybe? It's a little blurry. The implication is there.]
So it's nice to see I'm not alone on the ship, y'know what I mean?
[This is, irritatingly, starting to remind April of talking to the reference librarian at work. April likes them since they're also a being of confusion, misdirection, and deception, but also they hate talking to them about work-related things for the same reasons. April can never tell if they're having two different conversations, or if the librarian is intentionally misunderstanding what they say for a bit, and April hates it. They hate being the brunt of bullshit humans usually fall for.
But! That's probably not it. Friday is so nice after all, maybe she's not used to someone with an ambiguous face, or...
A thought crosses April's mind, and they put a pin on it for now.]
Oh, of course not, but there's like... A difference between mingling in a crowd and finding someone with the same team jersey on, right?
[Alright, no, nevermind, unpinning it now: Friday... knows about her face, right?]
Let me try this again: Hi Friday, I think your face is great and I think it's really neat that my face is like yours.
[While still genuine, some of that enthusiasm from the first pass is missing on this one. But! They try to rally themselves to keep going, since they aren't just here to compliment her.]
Also I think you're doing a great job here, and I hope you're being compensated well for it.
[April knows already there's no money on this ship, but there's more than one way to reward your workers:]
Yeah, like, medical benefits, free food, mandatory breaks, company gym membership, permission to take shots at problem customers, y'know, that kind of thing.
[let us pretend the keywords for this icon are 'intense eyes', because while not angry there's sure still some energy here as April leans hard on the desk.]
[Smooth, April, be smooth. April straightens back up so they're back on the right side of the customer/employee territorial line across the desk, and they clear their throat.]
I mean, that's - that's good, great for a help desk position to have, the option there...
Ma'am, a job where I'm allowed to murder problem patrons sounds like a fantastic vacation to me.
[But their words aren't full of passion or anything, because despite all this they're smart enough not to give themselves work on their vacation. They're just thinking ahead.]
But hey, you're right, I should be relaxing. God, first real vacation I've had in decades, you know? Ha ha ha...
... But y'know, all vacations come to an end, right? Otherwise that's just retirement, so uh... When I'm ready to get back to it, maybe I could drop off a resume? If you and the Captain ever need a helping hand with anything, I'm an experienced temp after all.
[Probably the answer is going to be the same gentle rejection; god knows April had to give a lot of those when they worked the front desk at MKIPS where every ghost hunter and podcast host thought they could just walk in and get a job from their 'work experience'.
Put like this, April is finally maybe feeling a bit self-conscious, but thank god they're at the end of this conversation anyway.]
[Well, April knows for a fact that not everything in this world is meant to be understood, and this might just be one of those things they had to be there for.
So they nod like they get it, and go] Oh, sure, yeah.
...
Well, I better quit distracting you from your work, heh. Have a good one, Friday!

Um, thanks! I didn't make it, but I will... pass along your compliments?

Who could ever make fun of Friday??][Okay, awkward, awkward, it's not landing, April tries to pick it back up.]

[she just. doesn't.]

Is the Captain hiring?
